Xanax Death

Benzodiazepines, also known as minor tranquilizers, are medications that are prescribed by doctors to assist with the reduction of anxiety. Benzodiazepines are frequently prescribed to treat the symptoms of panic disorder, but doctors also use them to treat conditions such as insomnia and seizures. Familiar medications in this class include Xanax, Ativan, and Valium.

Benzodiazepine Dangers

Benzodiazepines are not intended to be used as long-term treatment for anxiety. It is highly recommended that individuals requiring anxiety treatment seek therapy and talk with a physician about safer, long-term medications to manage anxiety. Benzodiazepines carry a high risk of abuse and dependence. When used in combination with alcohol, the results can be fatal, as both substances are depressants and can lead to respiratory failure. Complications from benzodiazepine withdrawal can include seizures or death. These medications should never be decreased or stopped without the supervision of a medical professional.
